Barry Tampa, FL seeks Photographer Laureate Application deadline: Friday, January 26, 2007 CITY OF TAMPA Public Art Program Robin Nigh, Manager 306 East Jackson Street • Tampa, Florida 33602 • (813) 274-8531 • FAX: (813) 274-8127 Pam Iorio, Mayor REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS THE BIG PICTURE PHOTOGRAPHER LAUREATE PROJECT Volume V City of Tampa,, Public Art Program Art Allocation: not to exceed $25,000 Application deadline: ALL materials must be postmarked or delivered by 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2007 Project Description: Inspired by historically successful photographic projects including the Farm Security Administration’s WPA photographers, the National Endowment for the Arts, and regional Photographic Archives documenting the richness and diversity of Tampa, the City of Tampa’s Public Art Program is seeking to commission its fifth Photographer Laureate. Since 2003, a “volume” or portfolio of an artist’s work has been added to the City of Tampa’s Public Art collection. The subject matter is open, and may include images of specific sites and subjects such as landmarks, landscapes, architecture, etc., or more abstracted themes such as cultural diversity, labor, industry, families, education, etc. are also acceptable. Over the course of time, the City hopes to accumulate and display a full and varied representation of the multiple and diverse perspectives of artist’s views on Tampa. Eligibility: This project is open to fine art photographers, photojournalists, and documentary photographers. Artists should have experience in implementing their ideas within a specified budget and time frame, working in the public realm, and working with public agencies. Submissions: A complete submittal consists of the following, incomplete submissions will NOT be considered. ⌦ Six (6) copies of a written statement regarding how you envision approaching the project. Length should be no less than one paragraph, no more than one page ⌦ Six (6) copies of a current professional resume, emphasizing professional photographic and/or Public Art experience ⌦ Visual examples of past work • Digital Format only o 10 images of completed art works or projects. o Works can be displayed as images in a Microsoft power point presentation or as JPG images burned directly to a CD-R. o If submitting images only, they must be 1920 pixels on the longest side and “high quality” JPG file format (do not submit TIFF, GIF, etc) at 300 dpi. o If submitting via Microsoft power point presentation, do not place applicant’s name or information in the presentation, only on the CD-R. o Must be compatible with Windows XP. o CD-R must be labeled with applicant’s name and contact information. o Include contact sheet listing thumbnails and titles of images. o Images on CD must be clearly titled and numbered to correspond with ID sheet. ⌦ ID Sheet: An identification sheet that includes the name of the project for which you are applying, the artist’s name, address, e-mail, and phone number, and for each image, the corresponding number, title of work, medium, dimensions, date of work, and price of work. You may choose the option of adding a sentence or two of additional explanatory text about specific artworks. ⌦ SASE: A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your materials. Resumes will be kept on file. Please note on your application if you are requesting that all of your materials (CDs, etc.) be retained in the City of Tampa’s Artists Registry. NOTE: Artists with materials on file with the City of Tampa’s Public Art Program Artist Registry must also provide a complete submittal consisting of the requirements stated above. Artist Selection Process: The 2007 jurors are Julian Cox, Curator of Photography at the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia; Gary R. Mormino, the Frank E. Duckwall Professor of History and co-director of the Florida Studies Program at USF St. Petersburg; and a City of Tampa Public Art Committee member. From this review a finalist will be selected. The artist will then work with the committee if any refinements are needed regarding the project vision and/or scope.
