Chris,

There is a print maker in Ontario named George Raab who makes photo based
images from digital files. He is doing something different but some of his
process might apply for someone whose interest was in a less than pure photo
image. He is etching copper plates so he can work into them after aquiring
the photo image. But from the rough description he gave me of how he
generates his dot pattern he uses photoshop to introduce noise and grain and
cranks up the result until he has the broken tones he needs.
