Mark... yes of course you're right.  They only need to be there for
the exposure, which would harden them vertically to the base of the
polymer.  ( I'm still thinking like a printmaker who's working with
copper and acids)

the next question is size of dots.  airbrush, as you mentioned, might work.

 I'd thought about that too.  Printmakers are using spray cans of paint
 to use as an easy "aquatint" for zinc or copper plates before etching
 them with acids, however... I think it wouldn't work for polymer
 plates because the water washout would undermine the dots of paint.
