Hi Scott,
That's really good news! There are quite a few university printmaking
studios that are being shut down in order to make room for digital
studios, so it's encouraging to hear that you have support in this.
Since these departments are shutting down printmaking, you just may
find a press from one of them. For instance, here's a listing I just
found for you;
===========
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago has 3 Chas. Brand etching
presses for sale:
2 - Chas. Brand hand operated etching presses (bed size 36" x 50") $2000.00 each
1 - Chas. Brand motorized etching press (bed size 26" x 48") $4000.00
* Please contact Danny Miller "off list" at dmille2@saic.edu or at
312-443-3881 for more information. Photos are available.
===========
There is a good list of printmakers at the Middle Tennessee State U.
You can find them here
http://www.mtsu.edu/%7eart/printmaking/wwwboard/index.html They often
have listings for used presses... that's where the one above is from.
Also check out the Florida Printmakers group at
http://www.members.aol.com/flprintmakers/fphome.html
They may know of something and they're in Coral Gables.
As Jon told you, you want an intaglio press (intaglio just means that
the ink is trapped in depressions in the plate, so the press rolls
over the plate with great pressure and pushes the paper into the low
spots to collect the ink... different thing than a litho press).
Keep us updated!

All this talk about photogravures has inspired me to try this out. I am
going to start looking for a press. My dept. chair said to go as cheap as
possible (used) but will back me up. I need to know exactly which type of
press will print these plates. Is this a lithographers press? Any
information will be appreciated. Also are there sources for this type of
equipment?
Thanks,
