Thanks all for the comments.  I have been looking at the R1800 (yes, I do want
a 13" wide printer) and the issue of banding is one I haven't heard about.  For
me, this is all a major step because I am accustomed to using my old Epson
printer where I can get third party cartridges that work just fine for $5. <g> 
Perhaps, like paying for sheet film instead of 35mm, I just need to adjust my
thinking.
