Jose Ortiz-Echague Wrote

From, ''Jose Ortiz- Echague'' First published in Great Britain 1979 by The Gordon Fraser Gallery Limited. Translated from the original Spanish by Jacqueline Hall.

Echague wrote:-

''I met Fresson when I was very young. On seeing my work he took an interest in it and throughout his life continued to supply me with paper, as did his son and grandson after him. When the later ceased production of the paper he provided me with the means for preparing it myself, and so for years now I have been making my own photographic paper which I call ''Carbondir''.

The emulsion used in the Fresson carbon process is a suspension of watercolour paint in gelatine which, when spread onto neutral paper, is sensitized a few hours before printing by being dipped into a solution of potassium bichromate. The great advantage of this bichromate in photography is that it renders gelatine insoluble on exposure to light.

The preparation of the paper, with its four coats of emulsion, is a long and delicate business.''
