''I met Fresson when I was very young. On seeing my work he took an interest
in it and throughout his life continued to supply me with paper, as did his son
and grandson after him. When the later ceased production of the paper he
provided me with the means for preparing it myself, and so for years now I have
been making my own photographic paper which I call ''Carbondir''.
The emulsion used in the Fresson carbon process is a suspension of
watercolour paint in gelatine which, when spread onto neutral paper, is
sensitized a few hours before printing by being dipped into a solution of
potassium bichromate. The great advantage of this bichromate in photography is
that it renders gelatine insoluble on exposure to light.
The preparation of the paper, with its four coats of emulsion, is a long and
delicate business.''
