I tried adding a lot, a medium amount, a little bit, and a tiny little bit. None of them had any significant effect except the tiny little bit seemed to make the gum slightly more viscous than usual, just a little thicker gum, but hardly a gel. This description isn't very exact; to be more precise, I used approximately 50 ml gum for each test; the amounts I used of saturated boric acid were: 100 ml, 50 ml, 20 ml, 10 ml, and 2-3 ml. It was only the last that seemed to thicken the gum at all, and that not very much.
