RE: VDB

Yes indeed; you loose the reddish brown color for dark brown black,
purple black and/or gray black colors. Straight Vandyke and/or Kallitype
and/or Argyrotype (or any other untoned nanoparticle silver image)
doesn't make me feel comfortable. That's why I was interested in
Cuprotype; if its stability is close to Cyanotype, then it can be a
strong substitute in making reddish brown images...

Regards,
Loris.

I don't disagree with Loris or Sandy about toning though I think it
should be noted that toning VDB causes a change in the color of the
final print. As for doubled coating, I prefer double coated prints,
toned or untoned and would suggest that one should perform their own
tests to see what works for them. There are a lot of ways to print VDB
and it takes some time to sort them all out to discover what the
variations look like.

I should also mention that additives to the sensitizer can be used to
influenced the final color of the print, toned or untoned.

I think Ware's Agyrotype process is worth exploring too, I keep telling
myself to do that but keep getting side tracked on to other things.

I agree with Loris. You can get as much or more Dmax with VDB by gold
toning (or toning with platinum or palladium) before fixing than you
can get by double coating.

In general it is best practice to tone as soon as possible, i.e.
right after the first wash in water. In fact, even protracted first
water bath can reduce the silver image if too long. Too long for me
is more than a minute.
