In collaboration with Benrido, Kyoto and FOTOSPHERE in NY, Project Basho is bringing "Time: Exhibition of Contemporary Collotype Prints," to its gallery in Philadelphia PA.
The show will open March 13 and run through April 27. As a part of 2nd Thursday Gallery Night in the area, there will be a opening reception on March 13th. The reception is open to public and runs from 6-9 pm.
For this show, Benrido has collaborated with eight photographers to create these collotpye prints. The show is comprised of 20 modern collotype prints ranging from monochrome to full color images printed on fine paper such as handmade Gampi. Participating photographers include:
Emmet Gowin Eikoh Hosoe Graciela Iturbide Koichiro Kurita John Pfahl Ryuji Taira George Tice Arthur Tress
Collotype is a photomechanical process which uses glass with gelatin as a plate. Because of the labor intensiveness, only a few printing ateliers practice the process worldwide. One such atelier is Benrido operating in Kyoto, Japan. Benrido has been actively refining and improving the process since its introduction to Japan in the late 1800’s.
This will be a truly unique occasion to see modern collotype prints of images by modern masters of photography. You can also learn a little bit more about the process on our website.
Hope you can make it to the show.
