I understand that chrome alum to some extent requires some heat (>40°C) in
order to do the crosslinking of gelatin within a reasonable amount of time.

Paper size with gelatin dichromate.

I did try using chrome alum, but found it not to be adequate at low
concentrations. At higher concentrations it would solidify a beaker of
gelatin solution to a nice solid mess.
