Phonetics has to do with pronunciation; "ludite" is spelling error.

Thanks Mark... Of course arguing phonetics of the English language is
as useless as arguing, say, digital vs. analog "art."
But -- you're right, I failed to heed the little voice telling me to
check sp. for Luddite. The movement seems named for Ned Lud "who
destroyed machinery ca. 1779," but the variants of vowel pronunciation
(for u, for instance) depend on the # of syllables -- except when they
don't. (Should the need arise, I'd probably spell lug or luck
correctly, tho lumber, lumbar and lukewarm could be perplexing.)
