Laura,

I've done 12 layers of gum with good results. With planning there is
no reason for that many layers, but it can be done. The problems as
many layers build up is the possibility of the size breaking down (I
have resized on top of building images when needed), and loosing the
whites if each layer is leaving a slight stain.
