Re: 2 tricolor gums
Hi Keith,
Yesterday evening I tried to oil the 18lb paper. It becomes almost
transparent (looks like semi-transparent ground glass) and the paper
texture is much less prominent to the eye; pretty appealing... Probably
the exposure time will be something like 1 (or 1.5 at max.) stop slower
than inkjet transparency, instead of the 2.5 stops figure when used
non-oiled. (Have to test it; but that's how I feel looking at it.)
I have two important issues with those paper negatives; they doesn't hold
much ink, therefore:
1. I have to use plain paper profile in the printer, which has a quite
coarse dithering pattern = not sharp and harsh to the eye.
2. The ink amnt. isn't enough to successfully block UV with colorized
negatives, even for Cyanotype (= an exposure scale of log 1.5) but I want
to use colorized negatives, hoping I'll get smoother results. (Black ink
is unnecessarily dense -> causing grainness in the highlights.)
Will play with different paper profiles. My aim is to be able to print
Cyanotype (ES = 1.5) with those paper negatives; if I can manage to block
enough UV with a more suitable paper profile, then I will also oil the
negatives, because Cyanotype requires something like 47 to 60 minutes
exposure to print full scale (= 15 discernible steps, ES log 1.5) with
non-oiled paper negative base, and I want to reduce this to something like
20 minutes...
Regards,
Loris.
