Mass. College of Art and Design
Alternative Photo Techniques

June 15-19

Students are introduced to hand-coated photo-printmaking processes,
including demonstrations and studio time making archival sun-prints
(cyanotypes and Van Dyke brown prints) on rag drawing paper, as well
as, on fabric. If you bring your water colors, the instructor will
teach you how to make them photo-sensitive too. In addition, we will
learn instant methods for transferring your ink jet pictures,
photocopies, and magazine images to other substrates, and how to make
large digital negatives from your 35 mm b/w negatives, jpegs, and flat
objects. Students will view work done in these antique processes, from
the 1800’s to the present.

Photo-Printing in Blue and Brown

July 5-10

For photographers, printmakers, fiber artists, paper-makers &
painters. A week of serious fun! You will learn how to create archival
cyanotypes (blue prints) and van dyke brown prints on rag paper and/or
fabric,
enlarge negatives/digital files both with a computer and in a
darkroom, and utilize various kinds of non-photographic means to
realize your personal vision. We will start with sensuous printmaking
papers on which to produce your pictures and even break the rules by
combining techniques.

We will tone the prints to gold, violet, green, and other colors. You
will see exciting images from 180 years of blue and brown printing,
covering the beginning of photography to the present. No prior
experience necessary, because the course will be individualized based
on each student's need and knowledge.
