Re: Hand collotype in process

Phritz,

"collotype" is called "lichtdrück" in German, so you could search in the net for that word.

There is a guy in Düsseldorf doing collotype: http://www.art-info.com/duesseld/voigt/edition/ldruck/lidru01.sht

Also, this atelier in Dresden: http://www.lichtdruckwerkstatt.de/

and this one in Leipzig: http://www.lichtdruck.de/

If you live near one of them, you could ask for a visit to their installations.

(answering my own question...)
no, one could not, because dried gelatin will pop right off the galvanized steel.
so, adherence of the dry emulsion is a criterium limiting the choice of support.

thanks,
i just did, but didn't really find anything on coating (i'm operating on high school french too). i found this on the other site: http://perso.numericable.fr/bquantin/web_phototypie/diapo_phototypie/1_preparation_dalle/1_preparation_dalle_fichiers/Slide0007.gif
it seems they use some kind of support for the emulsion.
on the phototypie site, it says that copper once was used instead of glass. but it's not used anymore, "for various reasons" and "the biggest one being the price". so, if one can use copper instead of glass, one could probably use a cheap sheet of galvanized steel too and use the good old magnetic sign material for a coating frame...

and how do you people coat emulsions on glass plates? freehand with a comb (rather thin coating) or with some kind of frame.
Look at the link Tom posted: http://www.phototypie.net
Even with failed high school French from half a century ago I figured
out a lot by going through the long set of photos and discription on
the site. My question, is why do they use glass? A less fragile sub
would seem a lot less trouble. Is there something about glass that
creates a better bond or do they flash it from the back to help bond
it? It seems that a metal plate could be grained the same way just as
zinc plates are for lithography.
