Re: formula for platinum standard solution #3 ?

Oops! Obviously I meant to type -ite rather than -ate in regards to
the traditional standard Pt solution.

Hi Tom,

If I understand your question correctly, you have ammonium
tetrachloroplatinate in either powder or liquid form, from which
you want to make the traditional standard Pt solution which is 20%
Potassium Chloroplatinate (K2PtCl4). I'm no chemist, but I don't
think it is possible, at least not without somehow removing the
ammonium. Sodium chloride is definitely not involved. That is
probably why you can't find a formula.

From Arentz, the formula for making the standard Pt solution from
powdered K2PtCl4 is:
50 ml distilled water @100°
10 gm potassium chloroplatinate

From Ware & Malde, the formula for making ammonium
tetrachloroplatinate from powder is:
5 gm ammonium tetrachloroplatinate (II)
20 ml distilled water

You probably have these formulas already and were hoping to find
something else, but I don't think it exists. Maybe one of the
chemists on the list will chime in.

Hope this helps,
Keith
