Re: PVA size (probably major setback)
hi marek,
i was halfway into what should become a 6-layer color print, with the
third layer, a second red one, i noticed a little more staining than
before (huge blank area, always a little stain on it) and to be safe, i
wanted to add another layer of caparol size (1+4). nothing happened
during the application, but the more vigorous brushing while smoothing,
wiped the whole image off.
the exposed gum is very vulnerable, when wet, on the caparol size. i
tried it again on the two test strips i posted earlier. when dry it is
very robust and can hardly be scratched off, but as soon there is water,
it changes. i re-wetted a corner of the test strips and used the brush a
little.it went right off. the emulsion adheres better on 1+5 size, than
on the 1+1.
did you ever notice anything similar with the gamlin size? maybe at
higher concentrations?
apart from that the size printed nicely, no stain, no annoyances. so,
i'm determined to find a way around this. i think i should better go
with a 1+10 dilution, like i planned to earlier.

All,
Here is an example of 4 layer gum print on PVA sized Fabriano Artistico
extra white paper. paper was sized with a 1:2Gamblin PVA/water mix and
another layer of size was applied before last indanthrone blue layer was
applied. Overall 4 layers were used with PBr25, carbon black (lamp black),
PB60 and PO73. The last one is limited to the background. PBr 25 from
Daniel SMith is an outstanding pigment that is perhaps to gum printing
what burnt sienna is to oil paiting. It makes an outstanding combination
when cooled with a second pass of indanthrone blue
