OK, I did some math - I was talking from memory before and I didn't have my
notes with me. (Still don't have them here...)
Let me correct myself:
B&S LiPd solution #3 formula:
- 2.3 g PdCl2 (mol. weight = 177.3274 g)
- 1.7 g LiCl (I think there's excess an excess of LiCl)
- 25 ml H2O
(See: http://glsmyth.com/AltProcess/Articles/Ziatype/Ziatype.htm and
http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/processes/platinum/the-ziatype-proc
ess)
Reaction formula:
PdCl2 + 2LiCl -> Li2PdCl4
2.3 g PdCl2 in 25ml water makes (2.3g ÷ 177.3274g) x (1000ml ÷ 25ml) =
0.5188M concentration.
Strength of PdCl2 ≡ Li2PdCl4 (see the equation above), therefore the
resulting Li2PdCl4 solution concentration is also 0.5188M, same as PdCl2.
Mol. weight of Li2PdCl4 = 262.11 g, therefore 0.5188M Li2PdCl4 = 262.11g x
0.5188M ÷ 1000ml = * 13.59% *
Apparently 15% strength as you stated before is very close to the correct /
exact solution strength. My figure is way off... Sorry for the
inconvenience.
For the records:
Since you need 2 mole of AFO for each mole of Li2PdCl4 in the pop palladium
process equation, then you need a matching AFO sensitizer concentration of
0.5188M x 2 = 1.0376M
AFO mol. weight = 428.0645 g (trihydrate!), therefore 1.03376M AFO =
428.0645g x 1.0376M ÷ 1000ml = 44.41% ≈ * 45% * for practical purposes.
(This is the AFO concentration perfectly matching B&S LiPd Soln. #3)
Please correct if I still have errors...
Regards,
Loris.

BTW, B&S Li2PdCl4 solution's strenght is something like 24-25% IIRC. (0.93M
exactly; that's what I was using for mixing my AFO sensitizer - according to
their recommendation.)
