I think you and I can agree that none of those is essential...

A famous Japanese copywriter, Takeshi Kaiko wrote a series of
TV commercials during 1980s for Yamazaki, a Suntory single
malt whisky, using a phrase "Don't add anything, don't take
anything." I personally don't like Suntory whiskys much but I
appreciate that concept.

Anyway, for neutralizing calcium carbonate buffer in the
paper, I think I posted a recommendation here a few years
ago. I don't remember exactly what I said, but I recommend
dilute sulfuric acid or a weak solution of pure sulfamic acid,
sold at hardware stores as a grout cleaner. You want to limit
your choice to something that would not interfere with
iron-based imaging system. Carbonic acid may be okay as far as
the adverse effects of residues are concerned, but I don't
know if it would be strong enough.
