My take would be: the manipulations aren't in excess than what we do
now to extract color images from a negative film (including dust/grain
removal, and color corrections and other small
manipulations/retouching), and we have perfectly good examples (from
that epoch) done with similar techniques (including autochromes) in
the achives...
