I did just print an image of my negative on photo glossy paper instead of transparency film, but there is still no visible indication of that strange banding. I'm baffled. I've already done all the diagnostic tests through the printer driver, indicating no problems with the heads or nozzles. So, I decided to make a print of the same image using a negative that I had output on someone else's 3800—it looks perfect.

Ok, then I'm gonna go say it's not an issue of the rendering intent. I
began to rethink that as unlikely to happen so regularly in exactly the
same direction as the printhead travel almost as soon as I spoke.

I'd go for one of two things:

1) Most likely. The rollers on your 3880 may actually be slightly
glazed on part of their surface, leading the OHP to slip ever so
slightly (increasing ink deposition when the medium travels over that area)

2) You may, for some reason, be getting some ink loading or deflection
on the printhead itself.

Ugh... I don't know where the driver setting is on the 3880. Someone on
the EPSON list can surely tell you.

As for the two problems suggested above, a guy named Arthur Entlich on
the EPSON list would be the guy I'd ask. He can give you specific advice
on cleaning the printer to deal with either and/or both of the issues.
But, I'd like Arthur to chime in before he just sends you a copy of his
free cleaning manual. I'm now intrigued to see what the answer is.
