Earl

I only recently rejoined this list when a fellow subscriber pointed out recent comments about someone being, among other things, arrogant.

I remembered that it was that someone who made me decide to leave earlier.

On rejoining I made a couple of contributions to be met by arrogance and deliberate provocation and accusations of ignorance. The 'fellow subscriber' and other subscribers of great expertise had told me that they never contribute, as they do not want to get involved in the level of discussion to which this list can sink. Do we really want that state of affairs to continue ?

I am not very keen on bullies. The only way to deal with them is to give them a dose of their own medicine. I apologise if this made me appear arrogant and bombastic.

As to flaming, it has been a problem with this list for many years. This is because nobody appears to be able to keep order.

It is quite possible to maintain an atmosphere of helpful and informative discussion by having moderators who are prepared to take decisions to, for example, guide the discussion and subscribers who are prepared to behave themselves. The discussion needs to be guided as there can be over eight hundred posts on a single topic which is far too many.

On an effectively moderated list neither your email nor this reply would have appeared or would have needed to have appeared and people wanting to bully or flame would not have been able to.

It is very simple, bullying and abusive contributions or flames do not appear.

Let us now get on with, as you say, 'helpful supportive comments'

I am pretty new to this list, so I don't know what to expect. The Loris/Terry
pissing match has no place here, in my opinion. I respect the input of both
writers, but it is not helpful for the rest of us when they proclaim the other
person's ignorance. I remember enough high school chemistry to be helped by
discussions of molar equivalences and reaction equations. I also want to hear
about successful applications of nineteenth century alchemical lore and modern
alt-process kit chemistry. Both of you guys are arrogant and bombastic. Leave
the flaming to private e-mails between the two of you, and post helpful,
supportive comments to the list.
