Thanks, Paul, for this information. I've been unsubscribed to the List for
a while, but Katharine and I emailed all the time. She has been incredibly
helpful to me when learning to print gum-- and, generally, just a good
friend. Her website on gum is, indeed, excellent and filled with very
knowledgeable and generous information.

I heard from Katharine at least once a week. I emailed her on Friday and
hadn't heard anything from her-- which was so unlike her-- so I checked the
List this morning. I am so sorry to hear this. I consider Katharine a good
friend, though I never actually met her. We were in a pinhole exhibit
together, out in Seattle, a few years ago. I'm sorry now I didn't make the
trip to attend the opening. But Katharine was a statistician, by training,
though now retired. She was very excited and energized by the recent
renovation of her house, just outside Portland, Oregon-- sent me pictures of
all the work that had gone into it. She was very proud (and rightly so) of
how the porch and extensive landscape designs materialized-- as they were
her own-- and thrilled she found a competent and hard-working carpenter. As
I'm currently undergoing a studio renovation, we had had frequent email
griping sessions about the difficulties of finding decent contractors. She
always made me feel better when things were going horribly wrong with one
thing or another-- and so encouraging with all my gum-printing efforts.

She has a grown daughter, Heather, who is a lawyer and who lives in
Minneapolis, and a grown son who, I *think*, also lives near Portland.

Very sad news. Katharine had a quick and keen sense of humor-- very dry--
which I loved --and suspect never translated as well on these Lists-- but
she was whip-smart, very funny, and very perceptive. She will be greatly
missed. This is so hard to believe as I just "talked" to her last week.

(Sorry if this post comes over more than once; I just resubscribed to post
this-- and have tried innumerable times now to post this, with no success.)

Diana
