[alt-photo] Re: bottom-weighting mats

I've seen some very interesting (yet not always successful) matting
techniques recently. There is always validity in trying something new but I
think the best rule to live by is that if the matte or the frame eclipses
the image avoid it at all costs. Personally, I don't put the kind of work
into my images that I do for someone to be distracted by a poor matting
decision or a gauty frame.

Recently, i 've seen some wonderful salt prints matted in round mattes. It
was a throwback to 19th century techniques and was very effective. Another
fantastic example of progressive and effective matting is Frederick Evans
who was way ahead of his time. Evans is probably the greatest platinum
printer of all time and was at the height of his career at the beginning of
the 20th century. He has some tall panoramas that are matted drastically
offset to one side and its remarkable how well this balanced some of the
images especially when viewed together.
