Maybe this will help you, Bob.

Dilute grocery-store ammonia 1:10 with distilled water; wet (not soak) a paper towel with it and fold it in half. Power down the printer. Put the paper towel on the print surface, unlock and slide the print head over the paper towel, and leave it for a few hours.

Clean up carefully and repeat your printing experiment.

I do this occasionally to clear stubborn nozzles on my Stylus Pro 4000. The vapors from the ammonia seem to do the trick.
