Greetings all:

A while back I asked the list for possible fixes for dichromate-stained
negatives. Carson Graves suggested 10% sodium sulfite followed by
redevelopment if the area looked creamy. Peter Fredrick suggested 1%
sulfuric acid.

I began with the sulfite, which had no visible (at least to me) effect,
an followed with the sulfuric. As I noted when reporting "failure," the
stain remained visibly distinct, separate from and stiffer than the
surrounding wet gelatine.

HOWEVER, appearance was deceptive. When I again printed the negative, the
area, which had been entirely opaque, printed as more-or-less clear film
(inviting an attempt at spotting the negative, through which I could
return to total opacity!).

Since the two successive baths presumably acted differently than either
alone, I can draw no conclusion except about my own fecklessness -- and
resolve to be more scientific in future. Meanwhile, if anyone else has a
similar stain on a negative, herewith encouragement/warning.
