First: I totally agree to what Ron Silvers wrote (The Sensuality of Platinum,
23/2/96). Just to add one thing: Those who want to see, what a difference a
carbon print instead of a silver bromide can make to an image should see the
Josef Sudek exhibition at the International Center of Photography from April 5th
to June 30th 1996. During the 50s, Sudek printed his old negatives again and in
the exhibition often the carbon print is shown next to the bromide. (At least it
was like this when it was shown at Cologne some weeks ago) This show is really
breathtaking or - as Terry would say - it will knock your socks off !

The catalogue is excellent as well. Even if they should not present an english
version at N.Y., the perfectly printed full colour original size reproductions
are worth the money. (Absolutely suitable for reproduction slides... ;-))

I should also mention another catalogue of an exhibition full of gum, platinum,
oil and photogravure prints, that will probably not be shown in the U.S: Frank
Eugene: The Dream of Beauty. Organized by Fotomuseum im Munchner Stadtmuseum
1995. Eugene certainly is more a pictorialist than Sudek, but showed an
interesting approach of combining the cliche verre with the photographic process
by vigorously scratching or drawing onto his negatives. The catalogue is
bilingual (eng./ger.) and quite heavy: one page for every day of the year. It
can be ordered in the U.S. at Nazraeli Press, 1955 W. Grant Road, Suite 230,
Tucson, AZ 85745.
