Sending prints, cookies, wine and love across borders...

I seem to have triggered a volley of gift exchanges between a number of
people on this list. As this is likely to cause a fair amount of
unnecessary grief if not handled properly, I am rushing this post to the
list.

Please don't send anything to anyone in a foreign country unless it is
welcome there.

Don't send anything you ever want returned, (e.g., prints for evaluation)
unless you have made it clear that this is your intention and there is no
confusion as to who pays for shipping, handling, etc.

The print you are sending may be worth $1 million to you but if you put
such a figure down in that little box on the green (or whatever) Custom's
sticker, you are likely to lose a friend in a hurry at the other end
because this *gift* is likely to cost the recipient tens of thousands of
dollars in Duties, Customs, taxes brokerage and other fees.

As gifts, SPECIMEN prints are more welcome, with either no financial or
very little financial value, e.g., less than $10.

As a rule, sending cookies, wine and other food items across borders is
asking for troubles.

And just to show that this post is about Alt-photo matters, in some
countries, there may be A LOT of trouble if you mention words like
*platinum* on a Custom's form... Words like *photograph* are more
welcome...

I hope I didn't forget anything important. Perhaps we can fine tune this
and add it to the FAQ. Gord?
