Jose Ortiz Echague was an outstanding pictorialist, master of the fresson
process (earlier in life he also worked with gum, oil and bromoil), born
in 1886 and died in 1980. He published numerous books of photographs on
the customs, landscapes and popular figures of Spain: Espana, tipos y trajes (1933); Castillos y alcazares (1934); Espana, pueblos y paisajes (1938);
Espana mistica (1934). These books were illustrated for the most part
from bomide and chlorobromide originals. His last book, Libro de
Fotografias (1977) was illustrated entirely with fresson prints. Luis
Nadeau met Echague a few years before his death and purchased from him
the fresson process. Years before, around 1965 or 1966 Echague had
acquired detailed instructons on manufacturing Fresson paper from Jacques
Fresson, grandson of the originator of this process, Theodore Henri Fresson.

Origianl fresson prints by Echague are in collections at the University of
Navarra, and at the Museo del pueblo espanol.
