The author of some old text (circa 1900), sorry don't recall the
title, that I read recently suggested making enlarged paper negatives
by printing through the back of developing out paper. The author
claimed that this will "neutralize" the paper grain. The resulting
"print" will show the grain of the paper when viewed by reflected
light, but the real paper grain and the grain which "prints out"
cancel each other out when viewed by transmitted light. I have yet to
try this but intend to - I've always made my internegs "face-up."

Somewhere else I read (perhaps Clerc or Wall & Jordan) that carbon
negatives were often preferred for printing; I assume because of their
linearity.
