Instead of cross hairs and light tables, I use a pinhole
registration system using standard spring-back printing
frames. The pins (needles, actually, mounted in small wooden
blocks for ease of handling) pass through holes in the wooden
back of the frame. The holes were drilled in the back using a
same-sized needle ground flat on two sides. I also drilled
corresponding holes in the glass (with a glass drill -
available at hardware stores) so that the frame can be
assembled before the needles are removed. In general I print
5x7's, but have made such a frame for printing 5"x40" negs
from a #5 Cirkut camera. I like to think this method is
foolproof. As proof of this, I am the only fool I know using
it.
