air bubbles in gelatin

The hardest part about coating good paper with gelatin for oil prints is
the foam and air bubbles in the mix. A bubble leaves a hole in the emulsion
and so I get black spots directly on the unprotected paper base.
Any suggestions? Would a glass rod rolled over the paper after coating be
a help?
Thanks,
Robert
