Besides the ability to choose different papers for their qualities when
hand coating, the reason I hand coat is that I am almost always called
upon (by myself and others) to produce prints on oversized paper. The
15X19 inch prints I made today were on 22X29 inch paper. I only coat an
area a little larger than the print size (I use drafting tape as my
boundries when coating). If I were using precoated paper that large
white border around the image would be coated with platinum, which would
be washed away in processing. A big waste.
