Emulsion xfer: grey goo question

I've just done my first emulsion transfers using type 669 film. Polaroid's
directions recommend that the back of the print be spray painted to
prevent it from melting in the hot water.

I didn't coat my first batch and sure enough I had a hot bath full of grey
goo after a few prints. It washed off of the emulsion in a few changes of
cool water and the resulting prints came out fine.

How do the rest of you deal with the grey goo? Seems silly to spray paint
the backs of each print.
