I have been asked what I do with the stuff.
Note test first to see if the paper you are using gives better results when
sized.
In general, however, a 1% size will give sharper images and better tonal
definition.
For a ! % size for salt, cyanotype platinum etc, take 1 g of DO and place in 5 ml
of purified water. Leave for half an hour ubtil the gelatine has absorbed the
water. Add the remaining 95 ml and keep the container in a water bath at 45 C
and stir until the gelatine has entirely dissolved, it should be a clear liquid
with no refraction from incompletely dissolve gelatine when held up to the
light.. Coat the paper with the size at this temperature and dry immediately in
a flow of warm air. Humidify the paper in a cupboard above a tray of warm water
before sensitising.
For gum use a 3 % size for hardened substrates and inter coat sizing and dry in
a flow of warm air.. But despite Judy's protestations the pterotype method using
dichromated Gloy works better.
For pigment 3 and 5 and 5 and the same for carbon receiving tissue.
For carbon use a 10 % solution.
Only mix as much as you need as gelatine in it true state should not be
redissolved more than a couple of times after it has gelled as it loses its
quality as a gelatine.
Happy sizing
