Peter Marshall mentions the volcano demonstrations using dichromate. I
was once given about 4 lbs of ammonium dichromate free by someone who used
to do a "volcano demonstration" in a class of 60 or so students until they
found out it was a bad idea. I must say that it is fairly easy to light
and it burns with gusto forming a flakey, grey ash. I still have a
colleague who is fond of burning magnesium ribbon in class and pouring
concentrated sulfuric acid on sugar, both of which are rather spectacular.
