Michael, the begining point of this discussion had to do with the fact
that diffuse light source like a bank of FL bulbs are not point sources.
The inverse square law, which you have nicely stated, holds for point
sources only. When you are close to aN FL bulb, each point on the bulb
acts as a source and is at a different distance from the place where you
are making the exposure; hence, the mathematical manipulation called
integration which is just a summing or adding process. This, as I have
mentioned, results in a complex mathematical expression which reduces
to the inverse square law when you are at LARGE distances from the
source.
