Until this topic came up on the list earlier this year, apart from Penn and
transfer processes, I had never come across the idea of using a substrate for
registration.
As to Irving Penn, it is possible to get a full range of tones in platinum
without double printing and , even if you do double print, the metal substrate
is not necessary for registration. I am sure, however, that Mr Penn did what he
liked, as is the freedom of all of us. Whether he needed to do it is a different
question.
The Penn prints on metal substrates that I have seen were not particularly
large.
