Toning salt prints

I read in an earlier thread that kallitype prints should be gold toned BEFORE
fixing rather than after. Does this also apply to salt prints? And if so, why?

I've tried both gold toning and selenium toning AFTER fixing and the results
seem fine to me. But as a beginner in this field I'm keen to learn if there are
advantages in toning before fixing.
