Sil says rightly:

If you mix small amounts of gum, sufficient for to or three days, you are
unlikely to need a preservative.
If you use white gum arabic powder you will not need to filter gum mixed
fifty/fifty from it.
If you use your gum at 17 degrees Baume, it will carry more pigment so that you
will be able to achieve in one coat what some people achieve in ten.
If you use the right paper you will not need to put on a heavy size first,so no
need for a hardener.
If you use the right film, paper and gum you will not need complicated
registration procedures.
Simplicity and safety allow one to concentrate more upon the image.
