Well, folks, I can't keep it quiet any longer.
Two points to consider:
1) anyone who owns a camera is a photogapher. They don't
have to use it, either, as they may be 'theorists' or
critics...
2) "Art is anything you can get away with." I saw that
defintion at an exhibit about 15 years ago and it
performs better than any other I have seen. In
"the best of worlds" that would be a poor excuse
for art but in the real fin de sicle world, this is
the reality.

The last thing to consider, lest alt-process folks feel
too superior to the Starn Twins or Robert Frank, effort
does not necessarily produce better art. Some people can
work an image to death (Betty Hahn, for example) and not
produce a greater art object than Christian Vogt with a
Polaroid SX-70...
