Since I see my responsibility as bringing enlightenment to the world, I am
quite happy to "share" wherever, as long as I don't get accused of
plagiarism should I ever get this material off the back burner & into
publication myself.

I'm not that familiar with "the Gernsheim oeuvre" (probably have it,
haven't read it), but I have some interesting notes on the Newhall. For
instance, his quote from James Thrall Soby to the effect that Rayograms,
etc., once the novelty has worn off, are bound to be taken down from the
wall and put away, to remain of historic interest only.

Thus it was a great pleasure a few years ago to read in the auction news
that a "Rayogram" had just sold for the highest price ever reached by a
photograph.

It's also interesting that this particular quote had disappeared from the
last edition of Newhall I looked at (maybe 1992?). But nevertheless, his
admonitions on color photography remained -- that it was absolutely
essential to keep a color photograph pure and not confuse it with
painting.

I believe I mentioned that I have some additional quotes on the subject
in an article upcoming in Maximum Monochrome....
