The electronic pathway need not be terribly expensive if one combines
silver based photography with electronic photography. True a digital camera
which even approaches (but not equals) the quality of an image made with
a good 35 mm camera is in the 10-15,000 dollar price range, but there is
another approach. That is, send your sildes off to be scanned onto a CD-
rom disk. This can be read by a medium priced computer system and outputted
(is that a word?) to a syquest drive. The syquest cartridge is mailed to
a processor who will then make digital prints from your files. Some of
these, dye-sub prints for example, are pretty darn good. Of course you
have to invest a lot of time learning how to use a program like Photoshop
which lets you do stuff that is intrigueing. Also, I have found it to be
additictive. I once sat in the computer lab from 8AM until 4 PM (No lunch
break) playing with images. If I don't force myself to leave the computer
along, I won't get ant alt-process work done.
