In addition to the use of hydrogen peroxide and mercury vapor,
I think you can also include "pre-flashing" with a light exposure
just below the minimum that registers on the film. All these
methods increase the "speed" of the film by improving the shadow
detail. There is no such thing as a free lunch. You can expect
to have greater fogging and reduced contrast, all things being
equal. (Of course, all things are never equal in photography. :-)
