As an addendum to the pH issue, I used to monitor the
water hwen I lived in town (Santa Fe, New Mexico) and
although it generally ran about 9.5 and very hard,
there were days when it was 5 or less. Finally called
the water department and found out two things which
may relate to toher people's problems:
1) about once a year, they run muriatic acid
through the lines to break loose the scale
2) water here comes from several sources which are
blended in varying proportions at different
times of year. When most of it comes from the
reservior up in the mountains where tree leaves
have lain for months, it is mildly acid; when most
is fossil water from deep wells, it is strongly
alkaline.
