List Etiquette

Hi all,
A few people have been pushing the limits lately, so I thought I'd
revisit the guidelines for commercial use of the list. Please remember
that this list is not supposed to be used for any commercial activities
at all (according to the university rules), so these rules are for the
benefit of the list - not because I'm a mean old tyrant.

People are welcome to advertise their products or services, as long as
they are within the scope of the list. Once every six to eight weeks
would be acceptable, and messages should not exceed twenty lines in
length (at 80 characters per line). If it is for a workshop then posting
again just before any deadline is also acceptable, to act as a reminder.
Please make sure to include contact details (email, phone, fax, and/or
postal) so people may contact you offlist.

When it comes to plugging your own product or service in reply to a
question, a few lines is acceptable, and the rest can be done in private
email.

It is not, under any circumstances, acceptable to blatantly plug a
commercial product continually. It is okay to discuss the technical
considerations regarding the product, or about the aesthetic results
derived from the product, but please limit the plugging of the product
itself to the guidelines above.

There are many people on this list that could quite happily make a bit
more money by plugging their products or services on this list, but who
we should thank for exercising restraint and consideration for the other
members.

Oh yeah, and I don't consider exhibitions to be products or services
(unless you own the gallery of course :-)). Anyone is quite free to plug
their exhibitions (say, once every fortnight) while they are on. I'm
sure most of the people here would be interested in seeing the work of
others.

cheers
