Judy,
I couldn't agree more. As long as we observerve reasonable precautions,
I believe that stray UV leakage is one of the least of the dangers we
alternate process folks face.
A couple years back my daughter conned me out of the price of a series of
tanning bed treatments in order to clear up her complection. I'm sure she
absorbed more UV in a couple of months that I can get from my light source
in five years. Of course, I don't approve of tanning treatments as a matter
of fact, but you can't tell a teen-ager anything.
The point is, one has to be aware of the hazards and take steps to avoid
them. The list is long. Ventillate your darkroom. Wear rubber gloves. Don't
pour water into acid. Don't mix organic materials with potassium chlorate.
etc. etc.
I have convienced my local Art Department to dump the carbon arc and I
thank and appreciate the info from list members who responded to my query
about this. Now I have a follow - up question. I would appreciate advice
from list members on a suitable light source for a small art department
that would work for photo silk screen and alternate process. I'm thinking
of something we could purchase not construct. Manufacturer's, model numbers
prices etc. - all would be helpful. I know little about photo silk screen
and the person who teaches it is the one who was using the carbon arc
which he thought was just jim dandy.
