Yes, I'm also interested in this kind of image blending.

I'm going to make an exhibition next fall, hoping to develop a technique to
blend photographs with 3d-rendered images. Can anyone of you suggest any
method for printing these images (up to sizes 40x50 cm / 16x20") in (near)
photographic quality? Iris-printer ... ?

Originally my idea for printing was to use 4-color gum-bicromate (and make
separation negs from the computer images), but I don't know the gum process
very well (I've only done Pt/Pd, salted p., kalli, cyano, and tried some
photogravure, with polymere). So, I'll just think about it ...

My modest experimentation with image processing and raytracing software has
taken place with Photoshop, and POV-Ray (one of the best raytracers, and
free!), and I'm making acquaintance with Bryce 2, a fantastic landscape
generator from MetaTools.
