Dear Alt-Photo'ers:
I am sitting here with Carlos @ my home … we have been discussing the
APIS in Porto and the primary worry is that there HAVE NOT been many
commitments from the list. Yes, no plans have been made, but, below are
Carlos' ideas for the convening, PLUS a strong commitment from the
Portuguese Center for Photography, a government agency. You will note
there are facilities for a large amount of people and there MUST be
prior commitments in order to reserve hotels etc.
I do not have anything to do with the planning, nor have I been to Porto
… I will vouch for Carlos' intention and dedication and for the worry
which involves putting something like this together. Again, his computer
at home has not been operating … extremely difficult to get on the web …
therefore, this IMPORTANT message to all APIS Porto planners is being
sent from California … 8 hours different.
Once a substantial amount of us (more than the 12 so far) have notified
Carlos about our intentions AND have sent a down payment or full payment
to him. Everything will be fine.
I again, can attest to the quality of hosting, facilities and
friendship.
Jack Fulton

BELOW IS THE PLANNED FOR AGENDA AND INFORMATION

1. Dates for the symposium are July 16 through 19 as previously
indicated.

2. Estimated cost for the event will be USD $175. per person, and
there is enough space to accommodate 300 participants.

3. There is also space to hold several workshops at the same time.

4. Hotel reservations and special hotel rates will be negotiated by
the Centro Portugues dae Fotografia, the government department that runs
the Portuguese National Photographic Archives and museum. They will
sponsor the event.

5. Transportation to and from the hotel will be provided if
necessary.
There will be a welcome desk at the airport and a trip to the world fair
is being planned for the last day.

Suggested program: (please offer ideas participation)
Day 1 - HISTORICAL PROCESSES
Morning - Theoretical Presentations
Afternoon - Technical Workshops

Day 2 - NEW ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES (new Argyrotype, Ziatype, etc.)
Morning - Theoretical presentations
Afternoon - Continued Technical Workshops

Day 3 - DIGITAL PROCESSES
Morning - Theoretical Presentations
Afternoon - Equipment Demonstration

Day 4 - Trip to Lisbon and visit to the World Fair

At the same time we are attempting to hold three exhibits at the same
location, and possibly an exhibit based on the Portuguese Historical
Collection.

Program at this stage is still malleable and suggestions are welcome.

Centro Portugues de Fotogarfia is a government run institution that
manages the National Archives, the National Collection and a new
exhibit, conference and workshop center built after the complete
remodeling of an old medieval prison. This is a huge space and the
architectural work done to renovate is quite remarkable.
They have agreed to sponsor the event, providing space, funds and P.R.
support.
We are now at a point when I must have firm confirmation regarding who
will be coming … or not coming.
It is now the time to start spending money, and this can not be based
only on the 12 confirmations I had so far.

Best, Carlos Gasparinho
