Terry,

I feel a need to respond/explain as you singled out my note though the
list sentiment had a measure of doubt about the plan for 98.

In the same note that you responded to I believe I go on to mention that
the note was not intended as a cheap shot at the organizers and I meant
that. My note's fundamental purpose was to suggest that planning for next
year could begin now.

Furthermore, to be specific about my statement of 'no intention of a cheap
shot', Carlos volunteered to organize an event without renumeration.
Things don't always fall into place easily and best intentions can be left
unfulfilled. The guy was doing something for the rest of us and obviously
was having some sort of a problem which turned out to be simply being
unable to access the list to tell us what he had done. Suppose it was
some other reason less palletable to both Carlos and this list, though
disappointing I still don't think someone volunteering their time should
be given grief.

Sincerely, Art

Subject: Re: apis - 1999?

This year's meeting has turned out to be somewhat disappointing in that
even if it does take place the lack of advanced planning will certainly
reduce attendance. I'm in no position to criticize as my schedule has left
much of what I wanted to accomplish sitting idle . . . . in short this is
not intended to be a cheap shot at the people who were organizing the event.

Rather, maybe it would be smart to get serious about planning the 1999
event so that it becomes an improvement over last years meeting.

Pick a location that is built and available. DON'T go with a location
that is planned for construction and/or is under construction even if one
of your parents 'PROMISED' it would be ready. I'm involved with
construction at times and there isn't much that is built and ready for
occupancy on schedule. In addition, you don't want to be the 1st users of
a new building anyway . . . a contractor saying its ready (something
about this and getting paid) and actually being finished can be many months
apart.

Schedule the thing and then let the participants on this list fill in the
program. The idea of an exhibit that would open (could have an opening
reception) with the apis event would be a nice touch.

Lastly, the great turn out at the 98 event was due to a dire lack of
events focused on alternative processes AND its location at the RPS AND
the Talbot trip. All three played into it.
